The Reverend Doctor Erika D. Crawford, D. Min.

Pastor of Mt. Zion A.M.E Church Dover, DE

The Reverend Doctor Erika D. Crawford heard her call to preach at the age of 21 and answered at the age of 23, preaching her initial sermon at Reid Chapel AME Church in Columbia, SC (7th Episcopal District).  After completing her undergraduate studies in Organizational Management at Voorhees College in Denmark, SC, Rev. Dr. Crawford returned “home” to the New England Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and in 2002, she became the first woman ordained in the then 110-year history of her home church (Bethel AME Church, Stamford, CT).

In addition to her undergraduate degree, Rev. Crawford received a Master of Divinity degree from New York Theological Seminary (New York, NY), and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Fordham University (Bronx, NY).  Her doctoral project was entitled, Serving Them Is Killing Me: Using Technology As A Vehicle for Self-Care for Bi-Vocational Pastors in the Black Church.  Rev. Crawford has also done postgraduate work at Regent’s Park College at Oxford University (Oxford, UK).

Prior to serving in a fully funded “full-time” pastoral capacity, Rev. Crawford worked extensively in management positions in the health insurance industry.  Over the course of more than 20 years of ministry, she is blessed to have served in a variety of ministerial capacities; Pastor of Allen Temple AME Church of Mt. Vernon, NY (New York Annual Conference); Pastor of African Methodist Episcopal Ebenezer Church of Rahway, NJ, where she was their first female pastor; Dean of the New Jersey Annual Conference Ministerial Training Institute; Coordinator of Ecumenical and Interfaith Ministry at Fordham University; Team Chaplain for the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) New York Liberty; Director of the Pastoral Care Department at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, NJ.  Additionally, the ministry has led her to preach, teach, and serve internationally in Jamaica (W.I.), England, Guyana, and Bermuda.

At Allen Temple, Rev. Crawford led the congregation in liquidating the church’s indebtedness; and at Ebenezer, Rev. Crawford led the congregation in erecting an edifice for Ebenezer AME Church in Malawi, Africa (20th Episcopal District); the premature liquidation of a $1.3 million mortgage; and the purchase of two additional properties, one which was the Rahway School for Colored Children (1840-1870) all while becoming a total tithing church.

On February 10, 2018, Rev. Crawford is appointed Pastor of Mt Zion AME Church in Dover, DE.  In addition to her work at Mt. Zion, Rev. Crawford is the Connectional (International) President of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Women In Ministry (AME/WIM); Member of the Pan-Methodist Commission and Co-Convener of High Heels Seeking Higher Ground, a Women’s Retreat Ministry.

Rev. Crawford loves the story of Noah's Ark and collects Noah's Ark figurines.  Her favorite scriptures are Genesis 9:13, 1 Timothy 4:14-16 and Luke 1:45.  She is EXCITED about what the Lord WILL do with her ministry as she preaches God’s word, loves God’s people and puts it all in God’s hands.
